On Tuesday, the Cardiff Blues unveiled the Argentinian versatile back, Lucas
Amorosino as their latest signing, I have have spoken to Los Pumas coach Keir Wenham-Flatt about the new man.
Amorosino, 28, who is comfortable playing wing or full back,
will move to the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park in the coming weeks after putting
pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season.
Amorosino in full flight |
He has been capped 37 times for his country, most recently earlier this month in the Rugby Championship against New Zealand and Australia.
The Buenos Aires-born back has played in the UK before, with Leicester Tigers in 2009, scoring four tries in his first six matches.
So who exactly is the new speedster, strength and conditioning coach with Los Pumas, Keir Wenham-Flatt who gave me an insight of what we can expect from the new kid on the block.
Wenham –Flatt was quick to tell me about the ability of
Amorosino, saying that he is, “extremely talented, one of those guys you can
bring off the bench and turn a game on its head.”
This is just another player in the Mark Hammett revolution
and could help to make up a back three of Alex Cuthbert, Gareth Anscombe, and
Amorosino himself, a potent trio.
Physical training is Wenham-Flatt’s speciality and he told
me that the winger is “very fast, agile and quite strong.”
Amorosino is certainly not a winger built in the style of
George North or fellow Cardiff Blue Cuthbert. However, the strength coach did
say that, “in terms of strength, he is in the top one or two amongst the backs
[In the Argentinian squad] for strength and power.”
A lot to expect then from the new man as he has a reputation
that precedes him. However, he should be firing on all cylinders immediately.
He will be match fit from the Rugby Championship and the language barrier will
not affect him the way it does some foreign imports.
Wenham-Flatt is an Englishman working in Buenos Aries
himself and was confident that Amorosino would “settle in well in Wales because
he is fluent in English.”
