Views On Gareth Anscombe From Down Under

As the Blues trail Gareth Anscombe, the deal looks more likely to go through as the days go by. What do we actually know about this boy wonder, most people have simply seen highlight videos on YouTube. Unsurprisingly in these he nails every single kick.

Kicking is a big part of Anscombe's game he is accomplished but not perfect. I had a chat with Stuart Lierich about Anscombe's kicking. Lierich is a kicking expert and coach from Australia and is far better informed to speak on the young Kiwi.

He told me that "his goal kicking is at 73% from 34 attempts." This is not bad but there is certainly room for improvement. The kicking guru says that this could come with a first choice role giving Anscombe greater continuity. Anscome has been playing second fiddle to Aaron Cruden at the Chiefs and his appearances have been limited to cameos at the end of games for the most part.

However, Lierich does rate the young man and likes his ball playing ability. He does believe that he will be a "good back up for Rhys Patchell." Patchell will still be the number one according to the Australian kick coach but he maintains that it is a "good pick up for the club."

I spoke to Stuart Lierich in more depth earlier in the year and you can read it here.
