Jon Davies Talks Tours and BBQ's

Being one of the most laid back men in rugby, it is a miracle that Jon Davies makes it on to the pitch to play some days. I spoke to the Wales centre in the changing rooms of T.M. Lewin in Cardiff. Davies was there modelling the stock as the WRU announced a new sponsorship deal with the store. He sipped on his glass of water as he mulled the questions over in his mind before answering them. The hot topic unfortunately was the devastating news of Owen Williams’ injury, but Davies also spoke happily about his move to France and the recent tour to South Africa.

The news that Owen Williams has suffered a significant injury to his cervical vertebrae and spinal cord was a shock to the entire rugby world. Jon Davies praised the support on social media saying that “Worldwide it shows the strength of the rugby community.” The social media campaign #StayStrongForOws has gained support worldwide, and shows just how much the rugby community cares about the young centre.
Davies went on say, “You don’t’ want to see any injuries like that. All the boys’ thoughts are with Owen and his family and all we can say is we hope for the best. I don’t know the ins and outs of the medical terms of what’s happening but I just home for him he makes a good recovery from it.”

On a more positive side Davies is “ready for the next part of his rugby career.” Before his big money move to Clermont however, Davies is looking forward to a “couple of week’s holiday first to recharge the batteries. The body is still bit banged up after South Africa tour but looking forward to a bit of a break.”

Davies has been involved in several narrow defeats with Wales and says that it “still hurts” coming up on the wrong side of the score line. Davies knows what Wales need to do and said that they need to “make sure we consistently perform for the full eighty. All their points came from our mistakes and its cutting that error out of our game and consistently perform at the level we can do.”

Davies told me that “Liam Williams was a broken man after the game, and he will probably blame himself.” It’s a bit early for micky taking at the moment but Davies did say that “he’s having a BBQ tonight so after a few beers I might mention something there!” As much as he jokes Davies does believe that “these things make you stronger as a player.”

Davies is very much ready for his break after two long seasons with the Lions tour taking up much of the holiday time in between them. So as he leaves Wales for France his rugby may be improving but his French certainly isn’t. He told me that the French, “terrible still, I thought I was going to do some on tour but I ended up just watching TV series.” That is the type of character that Jon Davies is, very laid back and very relaxed. Let’s just hope he knows passer la balle, so that he and Wesley Fofana can create a fearsome combination.
